Key Features

  • Optimized for low cobalt cure systems, reducing discoloration risk
  • High hydroperoxide content for efficient radical generation
  • Excellent color stability in clear and lightly pigmented systems
  • Improved shelf stability at elevated ambient temperatures
  • Consistent cure at reduced accelerator levels

MEKP Premium Low Cobalt Optimized is a high-purity methyl ethyl ketone peroxide formulation engineered to deliver excellent performance at reduced cobalt accelerator levels, typically 0.3–0.6% cobalt octoate (6%). This grade features a refined monomer distribution with an elevated proportion of the hydroperoxide species, which increases initiator efficiency and allows laminate producers to reduce cobalt content without sacrificing cure kinetics or through-cure quality. Reduced cobalt levels benefit end-products by minimizing the risk of cobalt migration-related discoloration in clear laminates and gelcoats, and by reducing the overall environmental and occupational exposure to cobalt compounds. The product is particularly suited for high-gloss gel coat applications and clear casting work where color stability is critical. Gel times of 20–35 minutes at 20°C are typical with optimized cobalt/MEKP ratios. The formulation also exhibits improved stability at elevated storage temperatures, extending practical shelf life in warm climates. Standard dosage is 1.5–2.5% on resin.

FAQ

Typically 0.3–0.6% cobalt octoate (6%) is sufficient for ambient cure at 18–25°C. This is roughly half the cobalt level used with standard MEKP. A trial cure is recommended before full production runs to fine-tune the cobalt/MEKP balance for your specific resin and shop temperature.
