Cobalt Naphthenate (6% Co)

CAS 61789-51-3In StockSample available

Key Features

  • Alternative cobalt accelerator to octoate with similar activity
  • Slightly different compatibility profile for certain resin grades
  • Well-established in Asia-Pacific and Latin American markets
  • Direct substitution for cobalt octoate at equivalent cobalt content
  • Compatible with all standard MEKP-initiated UPR and VE systems

Cobalt Naphthenate at 6% cobalt content is an alternative to cobalt octoate as an accelerator for MEKP-initiated cure of unsaturated polyester and vinyl ester resins. Cobalt naphthenate uses naphthenic acid (a mixture of cyclopentane and cyclohexane carboxylic acid derivatives) as the organic ligand rather than 2-ethylhexanoic acid. This difference gives cobalt naphthenate slightly different solubility characteristics, reactivity profiles, and compatibility with certain resin systems compared to cobalt octoate. In some UPR formulations, cobalt naphthenate is preferred for its slightly better compatibility with highly aromatic or DCPD-modified resins. The accelerating mechanism is identical to cobalt octoate — redox activation of MEKP peroxide species. Typical dosage is 0.2–0.6% by weight of resin. Cobalt naphthenate has traditionally been the standard cobalt accelerator in some geographic markets (particularly outside Europe) and remains widely used in Asia-Pacific and Latin American composites markets. Safety and regulatory status are essentially identical to cobalt octoate — it is subject to the same reproductive toxin classification under EU CLP and REACH restrictions.

FAQ

Both cobalt salts activate MEKP via the same redox mechanism. The practical difference is the organic acid ligand: octoate (2-ethylhexanoate) tends to give slightly better shelf stability in pre-accelerated resins, while naphthenate can show slightly better compatibility with highly aromatic or DCPD-rich resin systems. Performance differences in gel time and cure speed are generally minor at equivalent cobalt content. In practice, either can be used interchangeably for most standard UPR lamination.
