Isophthalic NPG UPR (Premium Marine)
Key Features
- Highest water resistance in the UPR family (NPG modification)
- Industry gold standard for osmotic blister prevention
- Validated 20+ year marine service history
- Excellent compatibility with NPG gelcoat barrier systems
- Specified by premium marine OEMs and classification societies
Isophthalic NPG (neopentyl glycol) UPR is the premium grade unsaturated polyester resin offering the highest water and osmotic blister resistance in the UPR product family. By replacing propylene glycol with neopentyl glycol (2,2-dimethyl-1,3-propanediol) and using isophthalic acid as the primary aromatic diacid, the polymer chain is made significantly more hydrophobic due to the gem-dimethyl substitution, which sterically shields adjacent ester bonds from hydrolytic attack.
This resin is the industry gold standard for marine gelcoat barrier coats and for structural laminates in premium boat construction. Water absorption at 40°C for 1,000 hours is typically <0.2%, versus >1.0% for orthophthalic grades. The resin forms the core of recognized osmotic blister prevention systems that have been validated in service for 20+ years.
Viscosity at 25°C is 300-550 mPa·s, suitable for hand lay-up and spray-up. Gel time at 25°C with 1.5% MEKP is 18-28 minutes, HDT after post-cure at 80°C/2h is 85-95°C. This resin is specified by premium marine OEMs, yacht builders, and naval architects for all water-contact hull zones including the underwater hull, transom, deck-to-hull joint zones, and keel areas.

Applications
FAQ
Neopentyl glycol (NPG) has two methyl groups on the carbon alpha to the hydroxyl groups (gem-dimethyl substitution). When esterified into the polyester backbone, these methyl groups provide steric shielding of the ester bonds from water molecules, dramatically reducing the hydrolysis rate. Propylene glycol lacks this protection. The result is that NPG/isophthalic UPR absorbs less than 20% as much water as orthophthalic grade under equivalent immersion conditions.
