Halogenated Flame Retardant UPR (HET Acid)

CAS 26455-61-8In StockSample available

Key Features

  • Reactive halogen flame retardancy — permanent, non-leachable
  • Meets UL 94 V-0 and BS 476 Class 1 at adequate thickness
  • Suitable for hand lay-up and spray-up processes
  • Can be blended with ATH for enhanced smoke suppression
  • Compatible with standard MEKP/cobalt cure systems

Halogenated Flame Retardant UPR is formulated with HET acid (chlorendic acid, hexachloroendomethylenetetrahydrophthalic acid) as a reactive flame retardant comonomer incorporated directly into the polyester backbone. This approach provides permanent, non-leachable flame retardancy that does not affect the physical properties of the cured resin as adversely as additive-type flame retardants.

The chlorine content (typically 20-25% by weight of the cured resin) provides effective gas-phase and solid-phase flame inhibition, enabling compliance with UL 94 V-0 (at adequate thickness), BS 476 Part 7 Class 1, and similar fire rating standards. Oxygen Index (LOI) of neat cured castings is 28-32%.

Viscosity at 25°C is 400-800 mPa·s. Cured mechanical properties: flexural strength 80-95 MPa, tensile strength 50-60 MPa. Properties are somewhat reduced versus unfilled UPR due to the high chlorine content plasticizing effect. ATH filler addition (30-40 phr) can further enhance fire performance and improve smoke density. Suitable for transportation, construction, electrical, and mass transit applications requiring FRP fire performance certification.

FAQ

With proper laminate construction (glass fiber content 25-30%, laminate thickness ≥3 mm), UL 94 V-0, BS 476 Part 7 Class 1, and DIN 4102 B1 ratings are achievable. Adding 30-40 phr ATH filler improves smoke density (reduces NBS smoke chamber values). For mass transit applications, EN 45545 certification typically requires additional testing.
