Mold Sealer for Composite Tooling

In StockSample available

Key Features

  • Fills surface microporosity of new and repaired molds
  • Creates non-porous base for effective release agent film formation
  • Reduces number of initial release coats required on new molds
  • Revitalizes older molds with surface degradation
  • Compatible with all subsequent mold release agents (wax, PVA, semi-perm)

This mold sealer is the first step in new composite mold preparation before applying mold release agent. New composite molds (gelcoat or laminate surfaces) have surface microporosity from the manufacturing process. If release agent is applied directly to an unsealed mold, it is absorbed into the surface porosity and an effective continuous release film is not established. This mold sealer penetrates and fills the surface microporosity of new gelcoated and laminate molds, creating a sealed, non-porous surface ideal for subsequent mold release agent application. Applied by wipe-on/buff-off method. Minimum 2–3 coats are required for a new mold. After full cure of the sealer, apply the mold release of choice. The sealed mold surface requires fewer initial release coats and establishes a more durable release film. Sealer also revitalizes older molds showing surface micro-crazing or porosity from long production use. Compatible with polyester, vinyl ester, and epoxy mold surfaces.

FAQ

No. Mold sealer and mold release are distinct products with different functions. Mold sealer is applied first to fill surface microporosity — it does not itself provide release from resin. After sealing, a mold release agent is applied on top of the sealed surface to provide the actual release film. Using release agent alone on an unsealed new mold results in absorption into surface pores, requiring more coats and giving shorter release life per application.
