Low Barcol Gelcoat (Flexible, Marine)
Key Features
- Flexible gelcoat (Barcol 25–35) resists cracking under impact and hull flex
- 3–6% elongation for superior impact energy absorption
- Isophthalic base for marine-grade hydrolytic resistance
- Pre-accelerated for MEKP cure
- Extends gelcoat service life in impact-prone marine environments
This low Barcol isophthalic gelcoat is formulated with a flexible-grade iso resin containing a proportion of long-chain diol or dimer acid to reduce crosslink density and produce a gelcoat with improved impact resistance, flexibility, and crack resistance compared to standard hard gelcoats. The result is a gelcoat with Barcol hardness of 25–35 (versus 40–50 for standard) that can absorb more flexural strain before cracking, making it ideal for boat hulls and marine structures subject to impact, slamming, or hull flex. The reduced brittleness significantly extends gelcoat service life in marine environments where hull impacts with docks, floating debris, and wave slam are common. Based on an isophthalic resin for marine-grade hydrolytic and blister resistance. Pre-accelerated with cobalt, catalyze with MEKP at 1–2%. Gel time 25–45 min at 20°C. Available in white and standard marine colors. The surface is less scratch-resistant than hard gelcoats but far more impact-tolerant.

Applications
FAQ
Yes, lower Barcol hardness means the surface is more susceptible to scratching from dock lines, fenders, and similar abrasion. This is an inherent trade-off: the flexible gelcoat is more impact-resistant but less scratch-resistant. For boat hulls, impact tolerance is generally the more important factor as impact cracks are structural defects requiring repair, while surface scratches are mostly cosmetic. Regular polishing and waxing helps protect the softer surface.
