NPG Isophthalic Gelcoat (White, Premium Marine)

In StockSample available

Key Features

  • NPG resin base — highest hydrolytic and blister resistance in polyester gelcoat class
  • Superior gloss retention (≥80% after 12 months outdoor)
  • Lowest water absorption (≤0.2%) for long-service marine applications
  • High Barcol hardness (45–52) for scratch resistance
  • Premium choice for 10-year+ marine service life requirements

This premium white NPG isophthalic gelcoat is formulated with neopentyl glycol (NPG) and isophthalic acid to achieve the highest level of hydrolytic resistance, blister resistance, and gloss retention available in polyester gelcoat technology. By replacing a proportion of the standard glycol with NPG, the resin backbone incorporates a more sterically hindered ester linkage that is substantially more resistant to hydrolysis and osmosis. This makes it the benchmark product for high-end marine hull construction where osmotic blistering must be minimized over a 10-year or longer service life. The gelcoat delivers exceptional initial gloss at 60°, with gloss retention exceeding 80% after 12 months outdoor exposure — superior to both ortho and standard iso grades. Pre-accelerated with cobalt, it catalyzes with MEKP at 1–2% and provides gel times of 30–50 minutes at 20°C for adequate spray application time. Barcol hardness after full cure is 45–52, reflecting the dense crosslink structure. Compatible with NPG iso or standard iso structural laminates. Titanium dioxide pigmentation provides brilliant white opacity and long-term color stability.

FAQ

Standard isophthalic gelcoat uses ethylene or propylene glycol with isophthalic acid. NPG isophthalic replaces a portion of the glycol with neopentyl glycol, which has two methyl groups on the central carbon creating steric shielding of the ester linkage. This makes the NPG ester bond approximately 3–5 times more resistant to hydrolysis compared to standard iso. The result is lower water absorption, better blister resistance, and superior gloss retention, especially in continuous immersion service.
