Methylhexahydrophthalic Anhydride (MHHPA)

CAS 25550-51-0In StockSample available

Key Features

  • Fully saturated ring structure for superior UV and color stability
  • Very low color (APHA ≤15) for optical-clarity applications
  • Drop-in quality upgrade over MTHPA for color-critical systems
  • High Tg and excellent electrical insulation after post-cure
  • Preferred for LED and optoelectronic encapsulation systems

Methylhexahydrophthalic Anhydride (MHHPA) is a fully saturated liquid anhydride epoxy curing agent offering superior color stability, optical clarity, and UV resistance compared to MTHPA (which contains residual unsaturation from the tetrahydro structure). The hexahydro (fully saturated) ring in MHHPA provides better photo-oxidative stability, making it the preferred anhydride for LED encapsulant systems, optical fiber coatings, and other optoelectronic applications where long-term color retention under UV or visible light exposure is critical. MHHPA has an anhydride equivalent weight (AEW) of approximately 168 g/eq and requires an accelerator (BDMA or imidazole catalyst) for cure at 80–150°C. The fully saturated structure also provides slightly improved weathering resistance compared to MTHPA in outdoor applications. Mix ratios and cure schedules are essentially identical to MTHPA, making MHHPA a drop-in quality upgrade for color-critical applications. The cured system exhibits high Tg (95–135°C), excellent electrical insulation, very low yellowing index, and good chemical resistance to mild acids, bases, and solvents.

FAQ

MTHPA contains a residual ring double bond from incomplete hydrogenation, which can undergo photo-oxidation under UV or blue LED light, causing yellowing over time. MHHPA is fully saturated (hexahydro), eliminating this double bond and significantly reducing yellowing. For LED encapsulants rated for 50,000+ hours of blue/white LED illumination, MHHPA is the industry-preferred choice. MTHPA is used in less demanding applications where cost is prioritized.
