Cobalt Octoate (12% Co, High Strength)
Key Features
- Double the cobalt concentration vs. 6% grade for reduced dosing volume
- Ideal for automated metering requiring precise small-volume addition
- Reduced storage and transport volume per unit of cobalt activity
- Compatible with all standard MEKP-cured UPR and vinyl ester resins
- Same handling requirements as 6% grade — established protocols apply
Cobalt Octoate at 12% cobalt content is a high-concentration MEKP accelerator for situations where lower dosing volumes are preferred or where resin formulation requires a compact cobalt source. By using a 12% cobalt solution instead of the standard 6%, the volume required is halved while delivering equivalent cobalt activity. This is advantageous in automated metering systems where precise small-volume dosing is more reliable, in highly filled resin systems (SMC, BMC) where space for additives is limited, and in spray equipment where a concentrated accelerator reduces the number of metering pump strokes needed. The chemistry, handling requirements, and safety profile are identical to 6% cobalt octoate — the product is simply a more concentrated solution in the same hydrocarbon carrier. Typical usage is 0.1–0.3% by weight of resin (equivalent to 0.2–0.6% of the 6% grade). As with all cobalt accelerators, it must never be mixed directly with MEKP or other peroxides. Under REACH, cobalt octoate including this grade is subject to regulatory restrictions as a reproductive toxin. Users should evaluate cobalt-free alternatives as part of their REACH compliance strategy.

FAQ
The elemental cobalt content is the critical parameter. To achieve the same elemental cobalt level: if 6% cobalt octoate is used at 0.4%, then 12% cobalt octoate should be used at 0.4 × (6/12) = 0.2%. Always calculate on an elemental cobalt basis when switching between different strength cobalt accelerators to maintain equivalent gel time and cure profiles.
