Low Smoke Flame Retardant Vinyl Ester
Key Features
- Halogen-free — no HCl/HBr or dioxin on combustion
- Low smoke density (NBS Dm <100) for safe egress
- LOI >28% for reduced flame spread
- Retains vinyl ester chemical resistance base
- EN 45545-2 HL2 and IMO FTP Code Part 2 compliant
Low Smoke Flame Retardant Vinyl Ester is a halogen-free BPA vinyl ester resin formulated with a combination of reactive phosphorus FR monomer, ATH filler compatibility, and magnesium hydroxide co-synergist to achieve both low flame spread and drastically reduced smoke generation during fire events. This product addresses the critical life-safety issue in enclosed compartment fires (ships, rail tunnels, underground infrastructure) where toxic smoke inhalation is the primary cause of casualties.
The resin achieves: LOI >28%, NBS smoke chamber Dm <100 (optical density at peak), and CO/HCN release levels compliant with fire toxicity standards. When laminated with 40 phr ATH + 10 phr Mg(OH)2 filler combination, EN 45545-2 HL2 and IMO FTP Code Part 2 (smoke toxicity) compliance is achievable.
Viscosity at 25°C is 350-650 mPa·s, suitable for hand lay-up of vessel interior panels, rail car interior linings, and underground infrastructure structural panels. Mechanical properties are reduced versus standard VER: flexural strength 100-130 MPa. Post-cure at 80°C/2h recommended for maximum fire performance development.

Applications
FAQ
ATH (40 phr, d50 8 µm) + Mg(OH)2 (10-15 phr) + this phosphorus vinyl ester resin is the standard combination for low smoke/low toxicity FRP. ATH releases water on decomposition, diluting flammable gases and cooling the flame. Mg(OH)2 provides similar endothermic cooling at higher temperatures (300-320°C decomposition). Zinc borate (5-10 phr) can be added as a char-promoter and secondary smoke suppressor. The combination minimizes both optical smoke density and toxic gas (CO, HCN) emission.
