Key Features

  • ZrO₂ ≥16.7% per EN 15422 / GB/T 21120 — qualified for structural GRC
  • Retains ≥50% tensile strength after 50-year accelerated alkaline aging
  • Cement-compatible alkali-resistant sizing (not silane)
  • Chopable for sprayed GRC and continuous-strand for premix GRC
  • Distinguishes genuine AR-glass from low-ZrO₂ knockoffs

AR-glass Roving is an alkali-resistant continuous glass fiber roving formulated with ≥16.7% zirconia (ZrO₂) per EN 15422 and GB/T 21120 — the threshold required to survive long-term embedment in the high-pH (12.5–13.5) pore solution of Portland cement and to keep at least 50% of original tensile strength after 50-year accelerated aging. The 2400 tex standard linear density is sized for direct chopping into sprayed glassfiber-reinforced concrete (sprayed GRC) and for laying as continuous strands in premix GRC architectural cladding.

The alkali-resistant sizing is cement-compatible (not silane for organic resins) and tuned for fast wet-out by the cement matrix while protecting the glass from chemical attack during the green and curing phases. ZrO₂ enters the glass network and reduces the rate at which hydroxyl ions attack Si–O bonds, allowing the fiber to retain structural function in cement for the full design life of the GRC panel. Lower-ZrO₂ glasses (often sold as 'AR-glass' below the 16.7% threshold) lose strength within years and are only suitable for short-life decorative use.

FAQ

Portland cement's pore solution has pH 12.5–13.5 — strongly alkaline. Standard E-glass dissolves rapidly in that environment because hydroxyl ions break the Si–O network and the glass surface pits, fragments, and loses tensile capacity within months to a few years. Adding zirconia (ZrO₂) to the glass network slows that attack: at ZrO₂ ≥16.7% the fiber retains at least 50% of its original tensile strength after the 50-year accelerated alkaline aging test specified in EN 15422 and GB/T 21120. Below 16.7% the long-term retention is not guaranteed, so a glass advertised as 'AR-glass' with lower ZrO₂ is suitable only for short-life decorative GRC, never for structural cement reinforcement.
