In StockSample available

Key Features

  • Water-clear, high-gloss finish with no pigment haze
  • Compatible with color paste additions up to 10% for custom tinting
  • Pre-accelerated for convenient MEKP catalysis
  • Thixotropic — stable on vertical surfaces
  • Versatile for decorative and craft composite applications

This clear orthophthalic gelcoat is an unpigmented formulation designed to provide a gloss, transparent protective surface layer where the natural color of the laminate or decorative substrate is intended to show through. Common applications include clear-coating decorative stone or stone-effect panels, wood-look FRP products, colored aggregate table tops, and craft applications where custom pigmentation is added at point of use. The product is pre-accelerated with cobalt and cures with MEKP at 1–2% by weight to give a water-clear, high-gloss surface film. Due to the absence of pigment, the gel time is typically slightly faster than colored grades at approximately 18–30 minutes at 20°C with 1.5% MEKP. Barcol hardness after full cure is 40–45. The clear gelcoat can be pigmented on-site by adding up to 10% compatible color pastes to achieve custom colors while maintaining acceptable mechanical properties. Thixotropic additives ensure the product remains workable at recommended spray viscosity without sagging. The clear formulation is compatible with all standard polyester laminates applied within the gel window. Styrene content is in line with conventional open-mold gelcoats.

FAQ

Up to 10% by weight of compatible styrene-based color paste can be added to the clear gelcoat to achieve custom colors. Additions above 10% may dilute the resin content and reduce Barcol hardness or cause cure inhibition, particularly with pigments containing driers or inhibitors. Always test a small batch first and verify gel time and hardness before full production.
