N,N-Dimethyl-p-Toluidine (DMPT)

CAS 99-97-8In StockSample available

Key Features

  • Best color stability of common aromatic amine accelerators
  • Intermediate activity providing practical gel times at 20°C
  • Standard accelerator for automotive body filler applications
  • Reduced yellowing vs. DMA — suitable for white and light systems
  • Compatible with BPO paste and certain MEKP cobalt-free systems

N,N-Dimethyl-p-Toluidine (DMPT) is the most widely used tertiary aromatic amine accelerator for BPO/amine cobalt-free cure systems in the composites industry, offering a superior balance of activity, color stability, and safety compared to DMA. The para-methyl group in DMPT blocks the most susceptible oxidation site on the aniline ring, significantly reducing the formation of yellow oxidation byproducts that are the primary aesthetic concern with DMA. DMPT provides intermediate activity between DMA (faster) and DEA (slower), achieving gel times of 12–25 minutes at 20°C with standard BPO/DMPT dosages. It is the standard amine accelerator for BPO-initiated cure in automotive body filler, dental composites, polyester adhesives, and cobalt-free composite laminating systems. Typical dosage is 0.5–2% DMPT combined with 2–4% BPO paste (50%). DMPT is also used in combination with MEKP in certain cobalt-free formulations to provide acceptable ambient-temperature cure. Like DMA, DMPT is an aromatic amine requiring PPE for handling, and it is classified as a reproductive toxin (Repr. 2) — a concern that is prompting development of alternatives.

FAQ

DMPT's para-methyl substituent sterically blocks the aniline ring's most reactive position toward photooxidation and radical coupling reactions. This reduces the formation of yellow azo and azomethine compounds that cause discoloration in DMA-cured systems. In automotive and marine white gelcoats and body fillers, DMPT is the industry standard because it minimizes yellowing while maintaining acceptable gel time and cure rate.
