Rubber-Toughened Vinyl Ester Resin

CAS 3066-71-5In StockSample available

Key Features

  • 2-4× higher impact toughness vs. standard vinyl ester
  • Excellent crack propagation resistance
  • Retains base vinyl ester chemical resistance
  • Suitable for impact zones in chemical plant FRP structures
  • Compatible with MEKP/cobalt and BPO/amine cure systems

Rubber-Toughened Vinyl Ester Resin is a BPA vinyl ester modified with reactive liquid rubber (CTBN — carboxyl-terminated butadiene-nitrile) or core-shell rubber particles to dramatically improve impact and fracture toughness while retaining the excellent chemical resistance of the base vinyl ester. The rubber phase, dispersed at 5-15% loading, creates a micro-toughening mechanism where rubber particles cavitate and shear-yield at the crack tip, absorbing fracture energy.

Charpy impact strength is 20-35 kJ/m² (vs. 8-12 kJ/m² for standard BPA vinyl ester), and Mode I fracture toughness (GIc) is increased 2-4×. Tensile elongation at break is 5-9%. The chemical resistance of the base vinyl ester is largely retained, as the nitrile rubber phase is inherently compatible with the acid and alkali environments the base resin handles.

This resin is used for structural FRP in high-impact service: crane outrigger pad FRP composites, marine fender systems, industrial flooring, containment structures in areas subject to impact loads, and lightweight ballistic-resistant composite panels. Viscosity at 25°C is 300-600 mPa·s, compatible with hand lay-up and infusion.

FAQ

CTBN rubber (nitrile rubber) has intrinsically good resistance to acids, alkalis, and many polar solvents — similar to the vinyl ester matrix. The chemical resistance of CTBN-toughened vinyl ester is essentially the same as standard BPA vinyl ester for most industrial chemicals, with the exception of some aromatic solvents (toluene, xylene) which can swell the rubber phase. Core-shell rubber (CSR) modification is more chemically inert and has minimal impact on chemical resistance.
