Styrene-Free UPR (DMST Reactive Diluent)

CAS 26455-61-8In StockSample available

Key Features

  • Zero styrene — eliminates primary occupational inhalation risk
  • Compliant with REACH, EU styrene, and US OSHA regulations
  • Processable by hand lay-up with standard MEKP/cobalt cure
  • Near-zero odor versus conventional styrene-based UPR
  • Compatible with glass fiber and polyester surfacing veils

Styrene-Free UPR replaces conventional styrene monomer entirely with DMST (dimethyl succinate / dimethacrylate-based) or methacrylate reactive diluents, eliminating the primary source of VOC emissions and occupational styrene exposure in open-mold FRP fabrication. This formulation is ideal for fabricators facing the strictest environmental and occupational health regulations or operating in confined spaces.

The reactive diluent system provides comparable viscosity (400-700 mPa·s) and processing window to styrene-based systems, with a gel time of 15-30 minutes using standard MEKP and cobalt cure packages. Cured laminates exhibit flexural strength of 95-110 MPa and a modulus of 3.3-3.8 GPa. The resin is supplied pre-inhibited and pre-accelerated options are available.

Key processing differences from styrene-based UPR include slightly higher cure exotherm, marginally different gel time sensitivity to temperature, and the need for specific peroxide/accelerator pairing for optimal cure response. The resin enables compliance with REACH/EU styrene emission regulations and US OSHA styrene standards while maintaining glass fiber wet-out and laminate cosmetics similar to conventional UPR systems.

FAQ

The most common alternatives are DMST (dimethyl succinate + dimethacrylate blends), methacrylate esters such as methyl methacrylate (MMA), or proprietary low-odor reactive diluents. This product uses a DMST/methacrylate blend that balances reactivity, cost, and toxicological profile. The alternative diluents are classified as non-VOC or low-VOC under most regulatory frameworks.
