E-glass Chopped Strand Mat 450 g/m²

In StockSample available

Key Features

  • Builds thickness ~50% faster per ply vs 300 g/m²
  • Suitable for hand layup and chopper-gun spray-up
  • Excellent conformability to complex molds
  • Emulsion or powder binder selectable by process
  • UPR/VE compatible with rapid wet-out

E-glass Chopped Strand Mat 450 g/m² is a heavier non-woven mat of 50 mm chopped E-glass strands held in random orientation by an emulsion or powder binder, designed as the structural CSM ply in marine hand layup, FRP tank wall buildup, and spray-up laminates. Areal weight is 450 g/m² (±5%) with filament diameter 11–13 μm, supplied in 1000 mm and 1250 mm widths. The higher per-ply mass builds laminate thickness about 50% faster than 300 g/m² mat at equivalent labor input.

Two binder variants are available: emulsion-bound (~60 s styrene solubility) for spray-up and high-throughput hand layup; powder-bound (90–120 s) for vacuum-bag layup and slow-cure schedules. UPR/VE silane sizing wets out quickly under brush, roller, and chopper gun. Moisture is held to ≤0.2%. The 450 g/m² grade is the workhorse CSM for boat hull mid-layer buildup behind a 300 g/m² gelcoat tie coat, and for spray-up FRP tank walls.

FAQ

CSM 300 is the standard tie-coat layer behind gelcoat — light enough to wet out fully under brush and smooth enough to block weave print-through from heavier reinforcement layers underneath. CSM 450 is the structural build layer used after the tie coat, where laminate thickness needs to grow quickly. A typical hand-laid boat hull schedule is: gelcoat → CSM 300 (tie coat) → CSM 450 + WR alternating plies → CSM 450 backing layer.
