Marine Gelcoat (Red)

In StockSample available

Key Features

  • Lightfast organic red pigment for color stability in marine UV
  • Isophthalic base for marine-grade blister resistance
  • Pre-accelerated for MEKP cure
  • Thixotropic for spray application on hulls
  • Compatible with polyester and vinyl ester laminates

This red marine gelcoat is formulated on an isophthalic polyester resin base and pre-pigmented to a classic marine red using lightfast organic red pigments selected for their UV stability and color retention in outdoor marine environments. The isophthalic backbone provides the hydrolytic resistance and blister resistance performance expected of marine gelcoats. Pre-accelerated with cobalt, catalyze with MEKP at 1–2%. Gel time 25–45 min at 20°C with 1.5% MEKP. Barcol hardness 42–50 post-cure. Red pigments are inherently somewhat more UV-sensitive than blue or black, so regular polishing and UV-protective waxes or clear coat overspray are recommended for vessels with high sun exposure. Suitable for topsides, watercraft hulls, deck equipment covers, and FRP marine accessories. Compatible with standard polyester and vinyl ester laminates.

FAQ

Organic red pigments can be slightly more UV-sensitive than phthalocyanine blues or carbon blacks. However, high-quality lightfast reds used in marine formulations (e.g., quinacridone or perylene reds) have significantly better UV stability than cheaper azo reds. Regular polishing with a marine compound and UV-protective wax will maintain color quality. For extreme UV conditions, a UV-clear top coat or UV-stabilized iso/NPG gelcoat is the best protection.
