Hollow Glass Microspheres (S60, High Strength)

CAS 65997-17-3In StockSample available

Key Features

  • Highest crush strength class (6000 psi) — survives compression molding and filament winding
  • Suitable for high-pressure RTM, injection molding, and compression processes
  • Better mechanical property retention than K-series at equal loading
  • Compatible with deep-sea pressure applications (tested to 500+ bar)
  • Inorganic glass chemistry — chemical resistance and zero water absorption

The S60 grade represents the high-strength tier of hollow glass microspheres, with an isostatic crush strength of 6000 psi (41 MPa) and a true density of approximately 0.60 g/cc. While denser than K-series grades, S60 microspheres survive high-pressure processing conditions including compression molding, filament winding under tension, and high-pressure injection systems, making them indispensable for demanding lightweight composite applications.

S60 microspheres are engineered for applications where weight reduction is required alongside mechanical performance that cannot be achieved with softer, lower-density grades. In high-performance composites for aerospace, defense, and precision marine structures, the additional wall thickness of S60 contributes to improved mechanical properties of the filled system — flexural modulus and compressive strength are better retained versus K-series grades at equivalent loading.

Key applications include deep-sea underwater vehicles requiring simultaneous pressure resistance and buoyancy, aerospace radomes and antenna covers where dimensional stability is critical, high-quality fairing compounds for performance marine vessels, and injection-molded SMC components where process pressures exceed the capability of standard grades. S60 microspheres are fully compatible with all thermoset and thermoplastic resin matrices.

FAQ

Isostatic crush strength (ICS) is the hydrostatic pressure at which 10% of the microsphere population collapses, measured by applying increasing pressure to a suspension of microspheres in a pressure vessel and tracking the decrease in floatation rate. S60's ICS of 6000 psi (41 MPa) means 90% of spheres survive 6000 psi hydrostatic pressure. This is far above the process pressures encountered in compression molding (typically 100–500 psi) and RTM (10–100 psi).
