Octyltriethoxysilane (Surface Hydrophobization Agent)
Key Features
- Non-reactive alkyl silane — provides hydrophobic surface coating, not polymer coupling
- Converts hydrophilic mineral surfaces to organophilic, water-repellent surfaces
- Improves filler dispersibility in polyolefin, PVC, and non-polar polymer systems
- Used for masonry impregnation — long-lasting water repellency without blocking vapor
- Also available as octyltrimethoxysilane (CAS 3069-40-7) for faster hydrolysis applications
Octyltriethoxysilane (OTES) is an alkyl-functional organosilane used primarily for surface hydrophobization of inorganic fillers, pigments, and substrates rather than for chemical coupling to polymer matrices. The n-octyl chain (C8) provides a non-reactive hydrophobic layer on mineral surfaces by condensing with surface silanol groups, converting hydrophilic inorganic surfaces into organophilic, water-repellent surfaces. This is distinct from reactive silanes like amino- or vinyl-silanes that form covalent bonds to the polymer during cure.
In filled polymer systems, octyltriethoxysilane treatment of inorganic fillers (silica, calcium carbonate, talc, kaolin) improves dispersibility in non-polar or moderately polar polymer matrices including polyolefins (PE, PP), PVC, and thermoplastic elastomers. The octyl surface layer reduces agglomeration, improves wet-out during compounding, and decreases water absorption of the compound. This is particularly valuable in exterior construction products, weatherstrip compounds, and roofing materials where moisture resistance is critical.
For surface waterproofing of masonry, concrete, glass, and natural stone, octylsilane is applied as an impregnation agent from dilute solution or emulsion. The silane penetrates the porous substrate and polymerizes to form a hydrophobic oligosiloxane network bonded to the mineral surface, providing long-lasting water repellency without altering appearance or vapor permeability. Both triethoxysilane and trimethoxysilane (octyltrimethoxysilane, CAS 3069-40-7) versions are commercially available with similar performance.

FAQ
No. Octyltriethoxysilane is a non-reactive surface modification agent — it does not form chemical bonds with polymer matrices. It improves dispersion of fillers and reduces moisture uptake, which can indirectly benefit composite properties, but it does not provide the interfacial chemical bonding that reactive silanes like aminosilane (A-1100) or glycidoxysilane (A-187) create. Choose octylsilane when you need filler hydrophobization for a non-polar matrix; choose reactive silanes when primary coupling performance is the priority.
