White Color Paste — TiO₂ in UPR/Epoxy (Universal)
Key Features
- Pre-dispersed paste — no grinding needed, consistent color development
- Rutile TiO₂: highest opacity white pigment (RI 2.7) with secondary UV screening
- Compatible versions for UPR/VER (polyester carrier) and epoxy (epoxy carrier) systems
- High TiO₂ loading (50–70%) for economical use at low paste addition levels
- Maintains TiO₂ particle dispersion stability — no re-agglomeration in stored resin
White Color Paste is a high-opacity, pre-dispersed titanium dioxide (TiO₂, CAS 13463-67-7) pigment in a compatible resin carrier, formulated for direct addition to unsaturated polyester, vinyl ester, and epoxy resin systems to provide white coloration and opacity. TiO₂ is the highest-opacity white pigment available (refractive index 2.5–2.7 for rutile grade), providing complete opacity at loadings of 5–15% by weight in the cured composite or gelcoat.
The pre-dispersed paste format eliminates the need for grinding or high-shear dispersion of TiO₂ powder in the resin shop, reducing equipment requirements and ensuring consistent pigment particle size distribution and color development. The carrier resin is selected for compatibility with the target system — polyester-based paste for UPR/VER applications, epoxy-based paste for epoxy systems. The dispersant system in the paste maintains TiO₂ particle separation and prevents re-agglomeration during storage and after addition to the base resin.
Rutile TiO₂ in color paste also provides UV absorption, which contributes secondary UV protection to white-pigmented gelcoats and laminates in addition to any added UV absorber. A standard gelcoat formulation for a white boat hull contains 10–18% TiO₂ paste (equivalent to 4–8% TiO₂ in the final gelcoat), providing opacity, white color, and UV screen, combined with 0.5 phr HALS and 0.5 phr benzotriazole UVA for full UV protection system.

Applications
FAQ
For complete opacity (hiding power sufficient to obscure the substrate at 0.5–0.8 mm gelcoat thickness), TiO₂ at 5–8% by weight of the final gelcoat is typically required. Using a 60% TiO₂ content paste, this requires 8–13% paste by weight of the gelcoat resin. White boat hull gelcoats typically contain 12–16% of this type of paste. Higher loadings increase opacity marginally but may slightly increase viscosity and reduce mechanical properties. Verify opacity using drawdown tests on black hiding power charts (e.g., Leneta 2C charts) with the gelcoat at target application thickness.
