Key Features

  • Pre-dispersed carbon black — consistent jetness and color strength without milling
  • Very low addition level (1–5% paste) achieves deep black in cured composite
  • Carbon black provides UV absorption — extends outdoor durability of black composites
  • Pre-dispersion eliminates carbon black dust hazard in resin shop
  • Select UPR or epoxy carrier version to match target resin system

Black Color Paste is a pre-dispersed carbon black (CAS 1333-86-4) pigment in a compatible resin carrier, formulated for direct addition to unsaturated polyester, vinyl ester, and epoxy resin systems to provide deep black coloration. Carbon black is the standard black pigment for composite resins due to its excellent UV absorption, heat stability, chemical resistance, and cost-effectiveness. The pre-dispersed paste format ensures consistent color strength and jetness without the dust, handling hazards, and dispersion difficulties associated with dry carbon black powder.

Carbon black pigments have an extremely fine primary particle size (10–80 nm depending on grade), creating a high surface area material that is notoriously difficult to disperse uniformly in resins without specialized milling equipment. The color paste pre-dispersion eliminates this difficulty — the carbon black is already milled to fineness (Hegman 6–7) and stabilized in the carrier resin with a polymeric dispersant. This provides consistent jetness (bluish-black undertone characteristic of high-quality carbon black), color strength, and UV absorption in the cured part.

Black carbon black pastes are used in black gelcoat formulations for marine decks, automotive body panels, and industrial equipment housings. In carbon fiber composite applications where cosmetic appearance requires a uniform black appearance, black carbon black pigment is added to the matrix resin to mask fiber pattern and surface texture variation. Carbon black also provides antistatic properties at higher loading (>2% carbon black in the cured resin), which is useful in electronic enclosure applications.

FAQ

Carbon black has a primary particle size of 10–80 nm and forms a strongly cohesive three-dimensional particle network through van der Waals forces and physical entanglement of particle aggregates. This network has very high yield stress — once formed, it is extremely difficult to break down by simple mixing. Without milling (3-roll mill, bead mill), carbon black added as powder to resin forms visible agglomerates that remain as specks in the cured part, give poor color development, and can act as stress concentrators. Pre-dispersed paste has already broken down these agglomerates to primary particle size using industrial milling equipment, ensuring consistent color and properties.
