Acetone/MEK Blend Tool Cleaner
CAS 67-64-1Acetone/MEK Blend Tool Cleaner is a pre-blended solvent formulation combining acetone (2-propanone) and methyl ethyl ketone (MEK, 2-butanone) in a 50:50 to 70:30 ratio by volume, specifically optimized for cleaning tools, spray equipment, rollers, mixing vessels, and work surfaces in unsaturated polyester, vinyl ester, and epoxy composite fabrication operations.
Key Features
- ✓Optimized blend: acetone fast attack + MEK sustained solvency = superior cleaning vs. either alone
- ✓Faster equipment readiness than pure MEK — acetone content accelerates final evaporation
- ✓Better heavy-deposit removal than pure acetone — MEK extends dissolution contact time
- ✓Effective on UPR, VER, epoxy, polyurethane, and most composite resin systems
- ✓Flash point governed by acetone (−18°C) — Class IB flammable, NFPA 30 storage required

FAQ
The 50:50 and 70:30 (acetone:MEK) ratios are both commonly used, each with slight advantages for different situations. The 70:30 ratio (acetone-dominant) provides faster evaporation, closer to pure acetone behavior, and is preferred for routine spray gun cleaning where rapid turnover is needed and resin deposits are fresh. The 50:50 ratio provides a better balance of initial solvency and contact time, making it more effective for cleaning thicker resin deposits, partially gelated material on rollers, and end-of-day cleanup when resin has had time to begin setting. Some shops use a 70:30 blend for in-process cleaning and a 50:50 blend for more thorough end-of-shift cleaning. A 30:70 (acetone:MEK) blend is available for very heavy cleaning but is less common because pure MEK is typically used in those situations.
