SEMISIL 200 vs AEROSIL 200: Performance Comparison for Composites

SEMISIL 200 and AEROSIL 200 are both hydrophilic fumed silicas with near-identical chemistry — performance is comparable, cost and supply differ.

Composite formulators sourcing thixotropic agents for unsaturated polyester, epoxy, and vinyl ester systems frequently weigh SEMISIL 200 against the long-established AEROSIL 200. This guide breaks down where the two grades match, where they differ, and how to make a confident switching decision.

Chemistry & Manufacturing

Both SEMISIL 200 and AEROSIL 200 are hydrophilic fumed silicas produced by flame hydrolysis of silicon tetrachloride. They share near-identical physical chemistry: BET surface area around 200 m²/g (±25), primary particle size of 12 nm, and SiO₂ purity above 99.8%. Surface silanol groups give both grades the hydrogen-bonding behavior that drives thickening in liquid resins.

The difference is brand and origin, not chemistry. AEROSIL 200 is Evonik's flagship grade, manufactured in Germany. SEMISIL 200 is produced in China to the same specification window, with batch-tested BET, tap density, and pH parity. For most UPR, epoxy, and vinyl ester formulations, the two perform interchangeably on a 1:1 substitution basis.

Performance in Resin Systems

In comparative testing across UPR (around 1000 mPa·s base viscosity) at 1.5% loading, both grades developed thixotropic indices between 4.0 and 4.5 after standard high-shear dispersion (15 min at 3000 rpm). Sag resistance on vertical glass plates was within 5% between the two — inside the batch-to-batch variation seen for any single grade.

Where you may see slight differences:

  • Dispersion energy: AEROSIL 200 has marginally tighter agglomerate distribution; SEMISIL 200 sometimes needs an extra 2–3 minutes of dispersion to fully de-aggregate.
  • Clear gelcoat haze: Both yield equivalent cured-film clarity when fully dispersed.
  • Storage stability: Identical — sealed kraft bags, dry warehouse, 24-month shelf life.

For thixotropic agent applications in wind blade infusion resins, marine laminating systems, and structural adhesives, both meet OEM specs.

Cost & Supply Considerations

This is where SEMISIL 200 wins. China ex-works pricing typically runs 35–45% below AEROSIL 200 CIF prices delivered to composite plants outside Europe. Lead times from Shanghai are 2–4 weeks to most Asian, Middle Eastern, and Latin American ports. Resinspot supports sample shipments (1–5 kg) and small first orders (200–500 kg pallets) — flexibility large multinational distributors rarely match.

Drop-in substitution is straightforward: same loading levels, same dispersion equipment, same QC testing. Most converters validate with a 50 kg trial batch before switching production volumes.
