Key Features

  • Highest surface area hydrophilic grade (380 m²/g) for maximum thixotropic efficiency
  • 60–80% stronger thixotropic network vs. SEMISIL 200 at identical dosage
  • Ultra-low effective dosage — 0.2–0.5 phr for TI 4–6 in gelcoat
  • Outstanding reinforcing effect in silicone rubber and RTV sealants
  • Direct Aerosil 380 equivalent — verified by BET and performance testing

SEMISIL 380 represents the highest surface area grade in Shanghai Semitech New Material Co., Ltd.'s hydrophilic fumed silica portfolio, with a BET surface area of 380 m²/g. This ultra-high surface area product delivers maximum thixotropic efficiency, reinforcing capability, and surface activity, positioning it as the premium choice for highly engineered formulations where performance demands are uncompromising.

With primary particle sizes of only 5–8 nm, SEMISIL 380 particles present an exceptionally large surface-to-volume ratio. The high silanol density per unit surface area creates an extraordinarily dense hydrogen-bonded network in polar media, building thixotropic structures that are 60–80% stronger than those formed by SEMISIL 200 at identical dosages. This makes SEMISIL 380 uniquely suited for ultra-low dosage thixotropy (0.2–0.5 phr achieving TI 4–6 in gelcoat), waterborne systems, and applications where other grades fail to provide adequate network strength.

Beyond rheology control, SEMISIL 380's ultra-high surface area contributes significant reinforcing effect in silicone rubber, RTV sealants, and high-temperature coatings. In waterborne acrylic and epoxy coatings, it provides excellent anti-settling performance for dense pigments and fillers. SEMISIL 380 is a direct equivalent to Evonik Aerosil 380, the benchmark high-performance hydrophilic fumed silica grade globally.

FAQ

In waterborne (aqueous) systems, thixotropy builds through hydrogen bonding between silanol groups and water molecules and between particles. The higher silanol density of SEMISIL 380 creates a stronger network in these highly polar environments than lower surface area grades. At typical dosages in waterborne coatings (0.2–0.5%), SEMISIL 380 provides 30–50% stronger anti-settling performance compared to SEMISIL 300. SEMISIL 300 is still effective but requires higher dosage to achieve comparable performance.
